Matti Esko has been appointed CEO of the new company, Kvarkenhamnar AB. Esko was previously the Managing Director of the international transport company, Euroports Finland.
Esko has extensive experience in the port and logistics sector and recognizes major potential in the new company.
“I look forward to an exciting and challenging assignment, as we create a port company that transcends national borders. Our objective is that Kvarkenhamnar will become a leading port organization in terms of market position, quality, environment and development drive in the expanding trade between the Baltic countries. One of many key assignments will be to ensure continued stable and attractive ferry traffic between Umeå and Vaasa.
The new company will be owned equally by Umeå Kommunföretag AB and the city of Vaasa. The cities are now pleased to have a CEO in place, who will focus on developing the offering to customers.
“We will build up a competitive and long-term sustainable port operation and under the leadership of the new CEO, we will develop a broad range of services adapted to the needs of the industry,” says Mikael Öhlund, President and CEO of Umeå Kummunföretag.
”We recently formed a joint ferry company and Kvarkenhamnar will be another step in strengthening cooperation to develop both of the emerging regions, Umeå and Vaasa,” he continued. “In Vaasa, we are also very satisfied,” agrees Vaasa’s Mayor, Tomas Häyry. “We believe that Esko has the prerequisites to build up a completely new port and transport concept in the Baltic Sea that corresponds with future transport requirements. The new port company constitutes a key feature in the East-West transport route, which is being built up between Umeå and Vaasa.”
Start of the operation, January 1, 2015 The new company will commence operations at the beginning of 2015. However, the new CEO will take up office already on October 1 in order to become acquainted with the port operations ahead of the launch.
